Afgelopen dinsdag steunden GroenLinks, D66 en de SP, samen met de PVV en de Partij voor de Dieren, een motie van SGP en CU die de regering oproept om de ‘racistische aanvallen op Afrikaners’ in Zuid-Afrika te veroordelen. Dankzij de tegenstemmen van VVD, CDA en PvdA werd de motie verworpen.
Foutje van deze progressieve partijen? Ik hoop het maar. Heb meelij, Heer, ze weten niet wat ze doen. Dat is: steun geven aan een eerder dit jaar door PVV-kamerlid Bosma begonnen campagne voor herstel van de oude stamverwantschap tussen Boeren en Nederlanders. Een revival van de Groot-Nederlandse gedachte. Op de websites van lugubere groeperingen als Stormfront en Onsvirjou, en in verklaringen van de Transvaalse Landbou Unie kunnen ze hun geluk niet op over het feit dat de volksnationalisten van de PVV en de mannenbroeders van SGP en CU nu ook de sympathie hebben van drie progressieve partijen.
In de strijd voor herinvoering van de apartheid zijn de feiten het eerste slachtoffer. Tegen beter weten in wordt volgehouden dat Afrikaner boeren het slachtoffer zijn van racistische aanvallen, dat de misdaad in Zuid-Afrika toeneemt, dat er een exodus van Afrikaners op gang gekomen is. Er zou zelfs sprake zijn van een ‘genocide’, juist deze week hebben vertegenwoordigers van apartheidsgroeperingen daar opnieuw over geklaagd bij de VN.
De feiten. Het aantal aanvallen op boeren is in de afgelopen tien jaar gedaald. Onderzoeken, zoals van Human Rights Watch, concluderen dat deze aanvallen niet als racistisch kunnen worden betiteld, en dat bijna de helft van de slachtoffers zwart is. Ook staat vast dat de overgrote meerderheid van slachtoffers van misdaad zwart is. Over de gehele linie is de misdaad in de afgelopen jaren afgenomen. Er is geen exodus, laat staan een genocide.
Wel bestaat er een revanchistische agenda die ons wil doen geloven dat het nieuwe Zuid-Afrika is mislukt en dat het onder de apartheid beter was.
Nog meer feiten. Het aandeel van Afrikaner bedrijven op de Johannesburgse beurs is sinds het aan de macht komen van het ANC aanzienlijk toegenomen. Maatregelen die de met privileges verworven rijkdom van blanken zou belasten, heeft de ANC regering tot op heden niet durven doorvoeren. Minder dan 5% van het land is in de afgelopen zeventien jaar herverdeeld. Hierbij worden boeren met marktgerelateerde bedragen gecompenseerd. De werkloosheid onder zwarte jongeren is zeker tien keer hoger dan onder Afrikaner jongeren. Enzovoorts.
GroenLinks, D66, SP: een verklaring met verontschuldiging voor het feit dat jullie er met open ogen zijn ingetuind is wel het minste.
Ik erger me dood aan alle hysterie rondom de moorden op Afrikaners en “arme blanken”. Onderliggende gedachte: blanken mogen niet arm zijn of vermoord worden, da’s meer iets voor “zwartjes”. Zoals je terecht opmerkt treffen werkloosheid, armoede en misdaad de zwarte bevolking meer dan de blanke. Het is nog steeds zo dat hoe lichter je bent, hoe beter je kansen in het leven. Maar wederom: er zijn nu zelfs blanken waar het niet al te goed mee gaat. “Daar moeten we wat aan doen!” Ik ben zeer teleurgesteld in de partijen die de racistische motie hebben gesteund. Bedankt dat je alles in perspectief hebt geplaatst.
Ik erger me dood aan de ongenuanceerde berichtgeving over Zuid-Afrika. Natuurlijk zijn er meer zwarte dan blanke slachtoffers, geschat wordt dat Zuid-Afrika ongeveer 50 miljoen inwoners heeft, waarvan 40 miljoen zwart, 5 miljoen blank en 5 miljoen kleurling. Vanzelfsprekend wordt de zwarte bevolking dan meer getroffen maar verhoudingsgewijs niet. Verhoudingsgewijs treft de criminaliteit de blanke bevolking meer dan de zwarte bevolking. Bij vhet steunen van de motie van van der Staaij is geen sprake van racistische motieven, aalleen grote bezorgdheid over de hoge criminaliteit in zuid-Afrika die ook de Afrikaners hard treft. Ja, en er is verwantschap tussen Nederlanders en Afrikaners, er bestaan nog steeds familiebanden, verbindingen op kerkelijk gebied en taalverwantschap. Deze verwantschap schept ook een band bij sommige mensen, en dat heeft niet met racisme of terug willen naar het apartheidssysteem te maken. Jammer dat meneer Luirink zo negatief reageert op deze met goede bedoelingen ingediende motie

Below the political veneer in this discussion thread there are real human concerns, serious and burning concerns. There are many Afrikaners from direct Dutch descent whose offspring have more of their extended family connections living in the Netherlands than in South Africa. They may or may not be in contact with one another, but some have the desire to return to the country of their forebears and/or offspring. No political motifs; merely an affinity they would like to experience. I know that there are many such people, many who have traced their forebears back to Holland, maybe up to a thousand, who are anxiously awaiting an outcome from the Dutch authorities to their petitions already lodged with the Dutch Embassy applying for Dutch passports.
I, for example, although I have most family connections and extended offspring born and bred with crippled accents in South Africa, I do have a daughter (Katja) who was born in Holland. For many years she had to beg for a Dutch passport, which eventually she did get. Problem? Dutch law is built on the premise that the Netherlands is an emigration country, and children assume the nationality of the father. That is, even though Katja’s mother is Dutch, Katja became a stateless person which was interesting for her, but later on life she did take a psychological backlash on this. Identity crisis!
The point I am making is that South Africa is now 17 years beyond Apartheid. There are a lot of things that still are wrong, a hangover from the past. Every country has its problems, no doubt the Netherlands, alongside Greece and Ireland as well. But this issue of “Boers” is in need some consideration, or realignment of identity in the context of the Westphalian sovereign state system, has merit. If one looks at the constellation of problems relating to forebears and offspring, definitely the Dutch law can do with some panel beating. Besides, its in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for people to move around as freely and live where they feel best at home, move as freely as financial capital does today.
It may surprise you all that the large chunk, if not majority of English speaking South Africans have British passports. During the negotiation years 1991 – ’94, when it seemed that South Africa was on the verge of civil war, both the British and Portuguese governments threatened to evacuate their “citizens” from South Africa. This sent shock waves and negotiations were soon on track again.
The point I am making is that the imposing of politics and ideologies on a people who need some sort of human rights-based redress, is totally deplorable. It is a form of political pornography, a gross violation of human rights. No doubt the ultra right wing “concern” is not about Boers, but something else, and likewise the “left counter arguments” are highly annoying. As annoying as the nationalistic motive of the ultra right, are the people with an obsession to score brownie points in the vein of “I know better”, in one or other way inferring that what is happening to the (Boer) farming community is “just rewards”. Or that land distribution is stalled, therefore the attacks. Arguing like retrograde Malema’s!
These “holier than thou’s” scrape the pot to the bottom and often come up with the land redistribution situation. This needs to be seen in context. The SA government (ANC) is the biggest landowner. Tribal chiefs (yes, they are all being restored under the Zuma government), are in control of huge tracts of land that rural people are challenging. True, much fertile land is in the hands of Boers who farm, and farm well. But this class of Boers would never dream of wanting to settle in Holland! As a well known Apartheid security chief once mockingly told me, “die Hollanders soos jou pa is lafaards! Dis mense soos jy wat ware Afrikaner seuns word!” (Extremely reactionary, for sure!)The truth is that deep down, in old Afrikaner mythology, no Afrikaner is an Afrikaner unless he/she has broken the umbilical cord with the old motherland, Holland. This is changing of course; but Holland has no special meaning for Afrikaners today. A reactionary, extreme reactionary utterance, but it does add a bit of salt on a very crippled discussion that Boers want to be resettled in Holland. If they are farmers, and good ones, they still have dare and courage and take up land offerings in neighbouring black African states. And if they are thinking of living in accordance to standards they were used to, the vast majority opt for Australia, New Zealand, Canada or even the Mecca of Imperialism. (like understood by the late Robert van Tonder).
What infuriates me, though, is dragging the farm murders into argument. Since my coming back to South Africa and active again from 1985 (peace keeping as an A N C Official, community policing pioneer) I can tell you that criminal violence in this land of mine is disgustingly horrible. You cannot believe the barbarity, the senseless, extreme violence one sees, not only on defenceless white farmers living in faraway places, but killings of blacks, mostly black-on-black, as well. I once had the unfortunate experiences of having to stand by and watch the killing of old black women believed to be witches. Unbelievable, I was traumatised. But I was in the role of observer and there was nothing I could do!
Whether I would like to return and settle in Holland? Well, yes. For my daughter and grand sons sake!
